Zam Bikes, custom, sustainable, bamboo bikes from Zambia!

So, a month or two ago, we posted about our vision for an artisan center on the East Side of Buffalo.  Well we’re excited that our vision is beginning to take shape…we have lots of ideas and lots of hopes for our humble little warehouse located at 298 Northampton Street.

Over the next few weeks, we’re gonna share with you some ideas we’ve had about “dream tenants” . . . entrepreneurs, artists, artisans . . . who provide a service to the community and/or are interested in a community art space.  The focus is really on creating and doing.

So far,we have Rusted Grain, who have set up shop and are creating their unique line of reclaimed tables, cabinets, and accoutrements for your home or business; ReUse Action also bases its green demolition activities out of the space and will soon be launching a community repair and window restoration service location for the community; we are in conversations with a glass blower too . . . which would be super cool!  But it’s a wide open world out there and we want to create and support a community of doers.

This is a grassroots effort, so interested artisans and entrepreneurs should have a true desire to be part of a community-focused effort and be willing to contribute to the creation and development of the space.  If you have an idea or you know of an individual who may want to learn more, have them call Michael at 716-949-0900 or Megan at 716-912-5529 or contact us via our contact page

So on with the show . . .

Part I. Are you a bicycle entrepreneur???

So last week, I took a whirlwind tour to Alabama . . . a long story, but during the trip, I had the immense pleasure of visiting an organization called HERO, located in Greensboro, hale County, Alabama.  WOW!  Awesome folks.  But they’ve initiated a venture called HERO bikes, where they build bicycle frames from locally harvested BAMBOO! and they train young adults in the technical aspects of bicycle repair, maintenance, and fabrication.  Anyway, I was inspired.  I started to think about the folks in our neighborhood that ride bikes and the lack of services for bike riders on the East Side.

And then today, I had friends in from Ithaca who attended Ani’s show last night at Babeville, and Greg was sharing his experiences working at RIBS (Recycle Ithaca’s Bicycles).  They offer DIY support for folks to come in and make repairs to their bikes, they provide bike services, and they sell recycle and repurposed bicycles.  Sounds, like a great effort!  Similar to the Blackstone Bicycle Works on the South Side of Chicago, which offers training and education for young adults in bicycle repair and maintenance.  And of course, no discussion of community bicycling is complete without a tip to the hat to our very own GO Buffalo Bicycle Workshops.

In doing some research on community bicycle programs, I came across Zambikes, an effort to offer training and economic opportunity through bicycle design and fabrication in Zambia.  In Zambia unemployment exceeds 50% and their customized bamboo bikes are now being exported all over the world.

So we get a bit dreamy-eyed thinking about a bike mechanic or bike shop operating out of the center.  Do you know of someone that has the skillz?  Who is looking to incubate a new bike business?  Who wants to be part of a new community-focused effort incubating on Northampton Street?

Send them our way!

Onward,

The folks at 298 Northampton Street

A few months ago, we published the post below on our blog and facebook page…we are actively looking for artisans, skilled tradepeople, and artists that are looking for shared work space. We are working on a community focused artisan space that provides services to the surrounding neighborhoods and city at large…We are currently negotiating the purchase of a building in MidCity Buffalo, not far from ArtSpace and Main Street…
Some IDEAL tenants, entrepreneurs, artisans might provide the following services….
–window restoration/repair, stain glass.
–lighting restoration, polishing, rewiring, repair
–bicycle repair
–appliance repair
–small engines repair/restoration…
–furniture refinishing/restoration/reupholstering
–blacksmithing artist/welder
–furniture maker/woodworker (we have one of these folks committed, but others are welcome)…
–a glass blower??? weaver??? or any other artist, entrepreneur that would benefit from an affordable community workspace…this would be an excellent place to get inspiration from others, incubate your business part time or on the weekends, share your skills through workshops/trainings, and/or have a space to exhibit sell your products/services.

Please forward to anyone you know that maybe interested…or contact, reuseaction {at} gmail(.)com or 716-949-0900.
Onward,
Michael

We Envision a Shared Workshop and Artisan Center!
Do you build sculptures out of bicycle parts? Repair appliances? Fabricate stain glass windows? Repair and restore doors and windows? Blow glass? Fix small engines?

Action HQ, located on Buffalo’s East Side, is seeking craftspeople, artisans, artists, and creative folks in need of a workshop and/or workspace. We are looking at a building that is approximately 25,000 square feet that could house a variety of individual workshop spaces, shared workshop equipment, and potentially a retail component. If you have an idea for a small business that requires a workshop space, OR you run a part-time business fixing computers and need a site for conducting business, OR you want to offer a new service to a community that would benefit from a folks that do things that keep the world running, instead of buying something new from Target, OR you build artistic creations that don’t fit in a house…let’s talk! This building will be available in the coming month and we would love to identify an initial team of folks that are eager to work towards a collaborative space for people that DO things, better yet DO things that service or provide a service to the community, or EVEN provide educational opportunities through their work for people from the community and people from afar. All ideas are on the table, we just need people that have an interest and passion in DOING, that are community-minded, and that have a skill to share that will provide a SERVICE. Contact Michael at reuseaction {at} gmail(.)com or call 716-949-0900. We are just in the beginning phases of drafting an “ACTION” plan that would result in the purchase and conversion of a soon to be available building into a new community asset. Send me an email describing your vision and maybe we can grab a coffee to discuss…

ReUse Action’s Restoration crew began a project to save this “Country Club”, built in the 80′s and greatly in danger of being lost.  The building boasts huge timbers and locally milled hemlock lumber. Unfortunately, years of neglect has resulted in severe deterioration to the southwest wall. It’s our hope the new owner will be able to provide the necessary push to get this building to the point where it can be utilized and appreciated for years to come.

Here are some initial photos of the building it was found Friday.

The top photo shows the building, completely finished with locally milled hemlock. The picture below shows the southwest Wall and the beating it has sustained from the elements, combined with years of neglect.

Day 1 was predominantly spent jacking and shoring the second floor which had nearly collapsed due to the deterioration of the wall.; We jacked the southwest corner nearly a foot to return it to level.

The structure has been shored and stabilized. On Day 2, we will demolish the remainder of the southwest wall and begin rebuilding.

Stay tuned to the progress of this unique structure.  ReUse Action’s restoration and rehabilitation team is estimating projects for 2012. We have several barns in the hopper, once we get this Ski Lodge back on the recovery path. Call us at 716-884-3366 (DEMO). If the building is too far gone our demolition team can give you a quote with the emphasis on saving as many materials as possible for reuse.

Between Christmas and New Years ReUse Action took on a kitchen demolition for the Phillips Family on Lafayette in the City of Buffalo.  Kitchens are one of the most specialized and individualized rooms in a house.  Often the kitchen is the first room to be renovated by new home owners, because of the diverse tastes of folks and because they’re such high use areas.  So, lots of cabinets get removed and many end up on the curb and in the waste stream.

Brandon and I, with the determined support of the homeowner, took on the task!  We carefully removed all the cabinets – they’re now being reused in the Mind and Body Salon, soon to open on Main Street next to the Vault.  After the removal of the cabinets, we removed all the plaster and lath, insulation, and gave the room a complete gut and clean prior to the installation of new cabinets.

ReUse Action’s Kitchen Demolition and Cabinet Recycling Service is an affordable option for the Do-It-Yourself family or in advance of contracted services and you can be sure we’ll recycle and reuse every material possible.

Give us a call for a free evaluation and estimate – 716-884-3366!  If you know you have a kitchen renovation coming up, or you have a friend who just bought a house, pass along our digits, we’d love the opportunity to not only recycle the old cabinets, but also design and build new cabinets that offer a new and unique look.  Rusted Grain’s shop is moving into high gear for 2012!  Help us spread the word.

In 2012, we resolve to keep more reusable materials out of the landfill, than ever before . . .

Landfill

Landfill - photo by D'Arcy Norman

You can help – call the ReUse Action TIP line, whenever you see building materials heading for the curb, OR if you know of a building project that will be tearing out the old, to make way for the new, OR you know of a pending demolition . . . WE WANT TO KNOW

CALL 716-884-DEMO (3366) or EMAIL tip {at} reuseaction(.)com. If you think it’s urgent (and it often is), you can also TEXT A TIP directly to Michael at 716-949-0900.

Everyone contacting us with a TIP, will be entered into a quarterly drawing for a $50 gift certificate.  If its a HUGE find, your TIP could land you a $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant.

Last month, Dennis Maher texted the TIP line and we were able to divert six antique steel and wood industrial carts.  We tracked down Dennis last evening and delivered his $25 certificate to Trattoria Aroma.

Just last week, Mary Fisher tipped us off to the disposal of over 20 oak church pews on Austin Street. Her TIP landed her a gift certificate to local favorite MERGE! We hope you’ll be next!

Lafayette Hotel Salvage - Tubs

Lafayette Hotel Salvage - Tubs

In 2011, our ReUse Action team kept over 30 tractor trailer loads of material from being buried in the ground.  Our largest project, the Hotel Lafayette deconstruction resulted in the reclamation of over 24 semi loads of porcelain fixtures, subway tiles, sinks, bathtubs, doors, and radiators.

Our four-story demolition at the CASE supply warehouse in Syracuse resulted in over 25,000 bf of reclaimed lumber that will be milled and installed in a restoration project at Onondaga Lake, and our residential demolitions for Catholic Health Systems, supplied nearly 10,000 bf of interior finishes for a new bar being constructed in Pittsburgh, PA.

Update: Here are the doors, installed.

Doors Installeed

Doors Installeed

We made these new doors from old materials. The pine tongue and groove was harvested from a barn in Lockport, New York this Fall, milled and reconstructed at the Rusted Grain woodshop into this pair of doors we just installed on a garage on Trinity Place in Buffalo.

ReUse Action and Rusted Grain can manufacture a variety of projects from reclaimed materials.  These doors look great on the garage, but also would accent a room in  a loft apartment or hous hold when installed as a sliding door (surface mounted).  You’d have a attention grabber that would accent a room when it’s both opened and closed.

Costs vary depending on size and style, interior or exterior applications, and level of finish.
